I dont know, somewhy I dont like the English word dragonfly given to these insects. I look at them as beautiful insects, very joyous and active flying from post to another in quick twists and turns, like small kids. I get fancied on their sight from my childhood and like watching them for their beauty, various colors and designs depending on each specie. In our language Malayalam (Kerala, South India) they are called 'Thumbi' which somehow carries a better thought and origins compared to dragonfly. In Kerala, Thumbis are connected with children and there are various poetic imaginations depicting that kids are friends to Thumbis. Especially during the season of the famous Onam festival celebrated across Kerala regardless of caste, religion or creed in each September, when flowers and Thumbis are abound after the monsoon rains, children gather in most neighbourhods ( less and less in urban socialising nowadays) and collect flowers from fields nearby for making the Pookalam, which is a floral decoration in most houses during ten days of Onam celeberations. These days are celebrated as days of joy, splendour and gifts in the family esp. new dresses and schools are off too. By the way making swings on tree branches and hanging on them is so common on Onam days

(The above Malayalam song writteen by poet ONV Kurup made immortal by the famous composer Ilayaraja in our language starts with the meaning :
Come Thumbi in all those small Thumba flowers, let us fly let us go to the top edge, let us celbrate.. .. let us make a swing on a tree and hang till the end of the sky... let us sing the old songs as honeydrops on our tonguetips.. come let us enjoy. etc. etc..)

This litttle guy caught my attention on a sunny day this Onam season in September when visiting my uncle in Kerala. Normaly they are very mobile and in any minor sign of approach they may fly. I think this guy had enough of some honey and was satiated andin some slumber- half drunk.. :) So he dd not fly so soon and I could go close. I had no cam with me and these ones are captured with Nokia E 75 with some editing. But the day was too bright n sunny , and frankly I could not see anything on the LCD display, and these are basically blind shots.Hope you may like it :)
