6. Got room for 2 dogs? T-minus 30 minutes and counting until lift-off

Inside of the car (it has a very special design of fold down seats, called 'Magic Seats", possible because the fuel tank is under the front seat) are items such as: a small color TV that we brought with us on the plane from Singapore the day before, two prize orchids, giant beans, boxes of clothes and dishes, and dog food. My wife and I would sit in front, while 4 people and 2 dogs were in the back.

Considering that we last packed 10 people into the same model of car the last time that we visited, this time there was LOTS of room!

Boston - Freedom Trail: Old State House

The Old State House, built in 1713, is the oldest surviving public building in Boston. . Alternatively called the Town House, the court of the provisional governor, City Hall, and in time the statehouse of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the State House is now operated by the Bostonian Society, Boston's historical society and one of many landmarks along the Freedom Trail.

The original Boston Town House was the bequest of Robert Keayne in 1657. The bottom of the medieval looking wooden structure was a trading market and gathering place for conducting business. Though lost in the great fire of 1711, the current brick building was rebuilt. A 1947 fire destroyed part of the the interior, and was rebuilt again. The building's High Georgian style and formal ornamentation suggests that the 1747 State House was designed by a trained British architect, and not an American.

The red brick building is perfectly symmetrical and ornamented. Its gambrel roof is obscured by pedimented end facades. Its primary feature is a tall multi-part steeple with elaborate clear glass windows. Beneath the restored lion and unicorn are bull's eyes windows, and a ceremonial balcony, ornamented with a segmented pediment over Corinthian pilasters.

The original building housed a Merchant's Exchange on the first floor and warehouses in the basement. On the second floor, the east side contained the Council Chamber of the Royal Governor. This room was the setting for many stirring speeches and debates by dedicated patriots against the British crown. In 1761, the "first scene of the first act of opposition", was James Otis' speech against the Writs of Assistance in the Royal Council Chamber. Though losing the case, Otis's speech was one of the incendiary events which fueled the American Revolution.

The central area of the second floor was the meeting place for the Massachusetts Assembly, the most radical of all colonial legislatures freely elected by the people. The Assembly was the first legislative body in the colonies to call for sectional unity, and the formation of a Stamp Act Congress. In 1766, during the debate on the Stamp Act, which led to the stamp Act Congress, the representatives installed a gallery so the public could sit in on their sessions. This was the first known example of providing public accountability for elected officials.

The west end of the second floor contained chambers for the Courts of Suffolk County and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. The Supreme Judicial Court is the longest seated court in the nation (over 300 years old) and was responsible for the ruling decisions in many of the early landmark trials. The Court was also involved in the drafting of the Massachusetts Constitution, upon which the United States Constitution is based.

Official proclamations were read from the east side balcony. The area beneath the balcony was the site of the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770, when a handful of British soldiers fired into a taunting crowd, killing five men. On July 18, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was first proclaimed from here to jubilant crowds. Later that day, the lion and the unicorn, along with other symbols of royal authority were taken down and burned in a bonfire in Dock Square.

After the American Revolution, the building served as the seat of the Massachusetts state government before its move to the present Massachusetts State House in 1798. John Hancock, chosen as the first Commonwealth Governor, was inaugurated in the Council Chamber in 1780. In 1788, sessions were held here that led to Massachusetts becoming the sixth state to ratify the Constitution.

From 1830 to 1841, the building was Boston's city hall following a rennovation by Isiah Rogers and William Washburn. From 1840-1880, it served as a commerical building. In 1881, after threats of the building's being dismantled and moved to Chicago, Illinois, the Old State House was restored to its original exterior appearance by the Bostonian Society. In 1882 the Lion and unicorn were returned to the east facade under a restoration by George Clough.

Today, the Old State House sits atop the State Street stop on the MBTA's Blue and Orange subway lines (opened in 1905) and houses a museum and is the home of The Bostonian Society.

Kohler Wisconsin. The Design Center has dozens of kitchen displays using, of course, Kohler products.The basement hold the history of the Kohler Company on display. Very fascinating. The founder made an entire town to house, feed, and entertain his workers. It was a very different era.

It was such a nice day, that we headed to Weymouth and Portland. Lucky to have blue skys as well after previous rainy days.

This is the Town Bridge in Weymouth. It is currently getting renovated. I assume that it opens in half, based on the barriers, and level crossing like lights.

It is Grade II listed.

Bascule road bridge crossing the Harbour, and linking Old
Weymouth with Melcombe Regis. 1930. Steel bascules, Portland
ashlar abutments and arches with some coursed sandstone.
The bridge has a nearly level roadway carried on bascules to a
flat segmental arch between formal abutments with square
corner buttresses.
At the S end, connecting with Trinity Road, a parapet wall to
the height of the abutments swings round in a segment, and the
Harbour wall is swept round to meet it, containing a small
platform to the W, and a similar platform to the E, but with a
set of steps within ashlar walls. At the N end, leading into
St Thomas Street, there is a similar abutment, with a pavilion
for the bridge controller, then 2 low segmental arches over
the quayside road, with stone parapets, stopped on the E side
to a flight of 20 steps to the Quay level.
The bascule section has a steel balustrade in 10 panels each
side, with a broad teak handrail. The end abutments are in
channelled ashlar, with a square opening with paired doors at
the lower level, surmounted by a cornice at roadway level. The
corner buttresses provide recessed embayments at pavement
level, and an entry to the control building on the NE unit;
they are terminated with prominent steel lanterns, 6 in all,
on open truncated pyramidal bases and with a trellis top. The
control pavilion has a low stone weathered roof above a
cornice, and is semi-octagonal on the E side, with a glazed
door from the pavement, and a single casement to 5 outer
facets, above 4 oculi and a door on the water side.
At the St Thomas Street end the 2 segmental arches over the
low road are in concrete cast on permanent steel shuttering,
and there is a low connecting arch in the wall between the 2
throughways; most of the stonework here, and in the lower
parts of the abutment retaining walls, is in grey sandstone.
There are 4 commemorative plaques or tablets: on the NW
abutment, in the embayment facing the pavement, is a granite
panel inscribed: 'From Weymouth New England to Weymouth in Old
England: 1930', and on the opposite side a bronze plate
records 'This bridge was opened by HRH the Duke of York on the
4th July 1930.....', also gives Bolton and Larkin Ltd as the
general contractors, Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Co Ltd
as steelwork contractors, and RW Vince as the Borough



Surveyor. At the S end, to the E the plaque records the
Council members for 1929/30, and opposite the bronze plaque
gives historical information about this and previous bridges.
It also records that the bridge was built by the Corporation,
the cost being shared between the Borough Council, Dorset
County Council and the Ministry of Transport.
Town Bridge inevitably holds an important position visually in
the town, and has been designed to give a dignified character.
At the same time it is of considerable historical interest; a
bridge was built, to replace a rope ferry, in 1597, rebuilt 3
times in the C18, the last in 1769, when it was moved from the
former alignment opposite Nicholas Street to the present
location. In 1821 a new 'permanent' bridge was sought, and
built in 1824. This is known to have had a toll gate at the
Melcombe Regis end in 1857.
The 1824 bridge was replaced by the present structure which
has importance in the townscape. It is a fine example of its
type displaying both technological and architectural
virtuosity.

Tunnel ventilation fans are big, but are designed to move large volumes of air at safe gentle rates of approximately 4 miles per hour. When occupied, 20,000 chickens will live on this floor in this chicken house. Roxanne and Matthew Molnar have an 80,000 poultry farm on April 21, 2011, in Grantville, PA and were recipients of a ,000 Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant. The money is a portion of the cost to modernize the second of two 40,000 chicken capacity chicken houses.
Roxanne Molnar and her husband Mathew have an 80,000 chicken farm in Grantville, PA, and were recipients of a ,000 Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant. Her oversized coat and wind blown hair are standard for this American poultry farmer, wife and mother of two boys, on Thursday, April 21, 2011. The grant money is a portion of the cost it took the Molnar’s to modernize the second of two 40,000 chicken capacity chicken houses. Chickens need to be kept at a comfortable temperature to remain productive. New radiant heaters keep the chickens warm during Pennsylvania winters. On warm days, ceiling vents provide passive venting of heat out of the building; when chicken house temperatures are estimated to be above 90 degrees, fans come on, pulling air through water evaporator elements lowering air temperature down 10-15 degrees and flows along the chicken house's length, in effect a tunnel of cooled air. The benefits to the chickens are heat and excess moisture removal; minimized dust and odor; limits buildup of ammonia and carbon dioxide; and provides oxygen for respiration. All these systems are computer controlled allowing owner, Roxanne Molnar to run the farm by herself and raise two small boys Gavin (2) and Grant (5). Husband, Matthew works off the farm and frequently travels, so along with the demands of parenting and manually controlling fans, vents, and having to remove the 80,000 chickens from their feeders and moving them around to cool them was an increasingly daunting task. This Sunday was beautiful, and as is increasingly normal for me these days, I spent some time outside enjoying the weather. Even when I was indoors, I had my windows all open and my ceiling fans running to circulate all that lovely Florida weather through the house.

I started a 9-week program designed to get you running 5K today; it was the first real exercise I'd done in a long time. And it was brutal, but rewarding, and it left me with a fantastic natural high akin to what I felt back when I used to take Paxil. Except, without any of the awful, awful side-effects.

1931 Stanford Road in 1919

This house at 1931 Stanford Road, between Devon and Coventry Roads, was advertised for sale in the January 1919 issue of the Norwester magazine. The house featured both front and side entrances, living room, hall, washroom, dining room and kitchen on the first floor, three bedrooms and a bath on the second floor, and a large finished room on the third floor. The home was built by The E. J. Scarlett Company and designed by Miller and Reeves, Architects. The Upper Arlington Company listed the house, with H. S. Warwick serving as the director of sales.

NYC - Bowling Green: Alexander Hamilton Custom House - The Continents - Africa

The Alexander Hamilton Custom House is one of New York's finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture, incorporating City Beautiful Movement planning principles with architecture, engineering, and fine arts. The seven story structure with 450,000 square feet sits on three city block in Bowling Green.

It is here, at the southern terminus of the old Algonquin trade route, Wiechquaekeck Trail, that Peter Minuet purchased the island of Manhattes for trinkets valued at 60 guilders, or about , from the Lenape Indians in 1626. Soon thereafter the Dutch West India Company built Fort Amsterdam on this site, which came to be the nucleus for the New Amsterdam settlement. After the American Revolution the fort was replaced by the brick Government House, which was intended to be but never used as a residence for the President. Instead it became the residence of New York Governors DeWitt Clinton and John Jay. The building served briefly as the Custom House from 1799 and 1815 before being torn down and replaced with rowhouses.

Before a federal income tax was imposed in 1916, a primary source of revenue for the federal government was custom duty. New York City, as the country's most active port, has had a Custom House since the country's founding in in 1781. In 1899, the United States Department of the Treasury acquired the Bowling Green property and sponsored a competition to build a new U.S. Custom House. Minnesotan Cass Gilbert, who later designed the Woolworth Building, won the competition by designing a building that was not just a functional building for commerce, but exuded a palatial grandeur. Construction began in 1900 and completed in 1907.

The interior of the building is dominated by the huge rotunda, which survives as one of the largest public spaces in New York. Commissioned In 1936 as part of the Treasury Relief Art Project, Reginald Marsh was commissioned to paint the elliptical space around the 140-ton skylight with sixteen frescoes. The larger sections portray eight successive stages of the arrival of an ocean liner in the harbor. Eight smaller panels, painted in grisaille to simulate statuary, depict famous explorers like Amerigo Vespucci, Christopher Columbus, Giovanni da Verrazano and Henry Hudson.

Above the main cornice on the sixth story are standing sculptures representing the great commercial sea-faring nations, from the Phoenicians to the Americans.

Central to Gilbert's design of the Custom House were four separate sculptures to be placed at the front entrance of the Custom House, representing four continents (from left to right) - Asia, America, Europe and Africa (pitured). Gilbert asked both Daniel Chester French and August Saint-Gaudens both to submit designs for the sculptures. Saint-Gaudens declined the invitation, citing other work he was occupied with, so French received the commission. French began designing the sculptures of "Continents" in 1903 and they were completed and installed in 1907. Art scholars consider French's "Continents" to be perhaps the best examples of architecture sculpture in the United States. Each of the four "Continents" represent a view of the continents through French's early 20th century lens: Asia and Africa are still cloaked in mystery, Europe is in the waning years of its colonial conquests, and America is emerging as a new, vibrant society.

The building was subsequently abandoned in the 1970's and was scheduled for demolition before being saved and restored in the early 1980's. In 1987, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York occupied the building and in 1994, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian took over two floors of the Old Custom House.

The United States Custom House was designated a landmark by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1965. Its interior was designated separately in 1979.

NYC - Bowling Green - Alexander Hamilton Custom House - Vespucius fresco

The Alexander Hamilton Custom House is one of New York's finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture, incorporating City Beautiful Movement planning principles with architecture, engineering, and fine arts. The seven story structure with 450,000 square feet sits on three city block in Bowling Green.

It is here, at the southern terminus of the old Algonquin trade route, Wiechquaekeck Trail, that Peter Minuet purchased the island of Manhattes for trinkets valued at 60 guilders, or about , from the Lenape Indians in 1626. Soon thereafter the Dutch West India Company built Fort Amsterdam on this site, which came to be the nucleus for the New Amsterdam settlement. After the American Revolution the fort was replaced by the brick Government House, which was intended to be but never used as a residence for the President. Instead it became the residence of New York Governors DeWitt Clinton and John Jay. The building served briefly as the Custom House from 1799 and 1815 before being torn down and replaced with rowhouses.

Before a federal income tax was imposed in 1916, a primary source of revenue for the federal government was custom duty. New York City, as the country's most active port, has had a Custom House since the country's founding in in 1781. In 1899, the United States Department of the Treasury acquired the Bowling Green property and sponsored a competition to build a new U.S. Custom House. Minnesotan Cass Gilbert, who later designed the Woolworth Building, won the competition by designing a building that was not just a functional building for commerce, but exuded a palatial grandeur. Construction began in 1900 and completed in 1907.

The interior of the building is dominated by the huge rotunda, which survives as one of the largest public spaces in New York. Commissioned In 1936 as part of the Treasury Relief Art Project, Reginald Marsh was commissioned to paint the elliptical space around the 140-ton skylight with sixteen frescoes. The larger sections portray eight successive stages of the arrival of an ocean liner in the harbor. Eight smaller panels, painted in grisaille to simulate statuary, depict famous explorers like Amerigo Vespucci, Christopher Columbus, Giovanni da Verrazano and Henry Hudson.

Above the main cornice on the sixth story are standing sculptures representing the great commercial sea-faring nations, from the Phoenicians to the Americans.

Central to Gilbert's design of the Custom House were four separate sculptures to be placed at the front entrance of the Custom House, representing four continents (from left to right) - Asia, America, Europe and Africa. Gilbert asked both Daniel Chester French and August Saint-Gaudens both to submit designs for the sculptures. Saint-Gaudens declined the invitation, citing other work he was occupied with, so French received the commission. French began designing the sculptures of "Continents" in 1903 and they were completed and installed in 1907. Art scholars consider French's "Continents" to be perhaps the best examples of architecture sculpture in the United States. Each of the four "Continents" represent a view of the continents through French's early 20th century lens: Asia and Africa are still cloaked in mystery, Europe is in the waning years of its colonial conquests, and America is emerging as a new, vibrant society.

The building was subsequently abandoned in the 1970's and was scheduled for demolition before being saved and restored in the early 1980's. In 1987, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York occupied the building and in 1994, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian took over two floors of the Old Custom House.

The United States Custom House was designated a landmark by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1965. Its interior was designated separately in 1979.

Sice 1962 this Greek Revival house in Oxford, North Carolina, the A. A. Hicks House, has been the home of Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home. It was built about 1903. It's in the Oxford Historical District and is on College Street. National Register of Historic Places #88000403 (added 1988)

The façade has the most characteristic feature—the full-height porch (portico) with fluted Ionic columns supporting the roof. The entry porch, however, is not very wide and extends probably less than 1/3 the width of the building. The entrance has multi-paned sidelight and a segmented transom. Above the entrance on the second level is a balcony with turned balusters and ornamental windows on either side of double doors with diamond shaped panes. Below the high hipped roof and prominent eaves are dentil; above is a curious wide pedimented dormer, the windows with a stylized star design. Throughout the windows are 1/1 double-hung sash windows. Symmetry dominates the entire structure, including the placement of the prominent chimneys. Many interior features existent from its construction remain unchanged.

Cool Outside House Design images

Cracker House - Chiefland, Levy County, FL

Here's a place that when you go inside, you're no longer outside.

This house belongs to my aunt and uncle. In fact, said aunt grew up in this house along with her other brothers, one of which is my dad, and sisters. My family and I would fly stateside from overseas and stay here during the summer in the 80s and 90s. I remember plucking ripe grapes from the mini-vineyard in the garden and enjoying their sweet goodness.

It's a "cracker" style home that was built early in the 20th century and was renovated over a period of years in the 90s and 2000s. Houses like this one were built in such a way to keep its residents as cool as possible under the Florida sun. The house has an interesting history and I love listening to my aunt tell stories related to it.

Island House and sculpture

This is Island House at 2 Fazeley Street.


This grade 2 listed building appears as an island in itself as it is one of the few buildings on this predominant flat area which is set to be developed. The land surrounding it which was mainly opened up by the demolition of Masshouse Circus is to be developed into City Park Gate, a residential scheme which is massive. It will link the Bullring to the Eastside more directly. The building has been acquired by a design firm and public art adorns the facade currently. It was refurbished, cleaned and a new entrance was attached to the rear in 2005.

Island House was built as offices and warehousing for Churchill & Co, and has parallels in other commercial and industrial buildings designed by Pepper, of which 75 Vyse Street in the Jewellery Quarter, constructed in 1909, is now listed by English Heritage at grade II.


I'm not sure that it is Grade II - never found it on British Listed Buildings or Heritage Gateway.
