San Agustín Church, built between 1587 and 1606, is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines, and the only building left intact after the destruction of Intramuros during the Battle of Manila (1945). The present structure is actually the third to stand on the site and has survived seven major earthquakes, as well as the wars in Manila. The church remains under the care of the Augustinians who founded it.

The San Agustín Church lies inside the walled city of Intramuros located in the capital city Manila, Philippines. It is the first European stone church to be built in the Philippines designed in Spanish architectural structure. The church also houses the legacies of the Spanish conquistadors, Miguel López de Legazpi, Juan de Salcedo and Martín de Goiti who are buried and laid to rest in a tomb, underneath the church.

The church has 14 side chapels and a trompe-l'oeil ceiling. Up in the choir loft are the hand-carved 17th-century seats of molave, a beautiful tropical hardwood. Adjacent to the church is a small museum run by the Augustinian order, featuring antique vestments, colonial furniture, and religious paintings and icons.

Together with three other ancient churches in the country, it was designated as part of the World Heritage Site "Baroque Churches of the Philippines" in 1993.

1638 E. 1st. Lifetime home of magician Jerry Andrus (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Andrus) who called it the Castle of Chaos. With its unusual Moorish style "keyhole" windows, stucco'd brick walls and Eastlake/Stick design elements, it strongly resembles Design. No. 44 from G.F. Barber's Cottage Souvenir No. 2 pattern book. The house was built in 1893, and has undergone renovation since Andrus' death in 2007.

Lake Flato is an architecture firm that does some really interesting contemporary design work. This one is called "The Plant" because years ago it was a cement plant. It has been redone nicely and is now a rental getaway not too far outside of Austin. It has a huge screened-in porch and a swimming pool, all sitting comfortably on 17 acres out in the woods.

Wall Slices Through House

Polycarbonate strips are 'stitched' into the angled, tilted, wall that slices through the small structure, dividing it into zones. As the wall passes through the building it carves a path of narrow openings that have been glazed to allow light to bounce into the rooms.

Light House Point

Just outside of White Halll, Michigan is a great State Park called "Silver Lake Sand Dunes". There's a great beach, and an even better light house.

I spent a weekend there and was fortunate enough to find some great sunsets. This was shot with a Canon 7d and a 15-85 lens. Obviously, this is an HDR image compiled from 3 exposures.

This is just south of Pentwater on Lake Michigan in July. Little Sable Point Light was designed by Col. Orlando M. Poe in 1874. It's distinctive shape is known as a "Poe Lighthouse". It's made from brick and is 108 feet high including the top.

It's third order Frenel Lens products 40,000 candle power at night, and is fully automated (since 1974). More information can be found here:
